Glendale Youth Orchestra

Conductor
The Glendale Youth Orchestra, named an LA Phil Premier Youth Orchestra, seeks a new conductor (for the first time in nineteen years) to lead an orchestra of young musicians ranging in ages from 9-18.  Job begins in July 2019.

Job Description:

  • Preparation and leading one rehearsal per week, on Sunday afternoons September - May
  • Selection and preparation of concert repertoire
  • Responsible for preparation of orchestra parts
  • Three concerts per season
  • Host one Showcase Recital
  • Audition and select membership
  • Outreach with local Middle & High School Orchestra teachers
  • Outreach with local music teachers
  • Pedagogical skills
  • Work closely with Board of Directors



Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Music or higher
  • Minimum five years conducting experience
  • Previous experience working with students
  • Upbeat, positive and creative personality
  • High-level verbal and written communication skills
  • A record of successfully teaching and guiding students
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to attract and retain student musicians

The GYO is a non-profit community benefit corporation, formed in 1989, that performs three classical concerts each season at the Alex Theatre to audiences of at least 500. Our mission is based on the belief that our young people have a better chance of succeeding in their world if they appreciate and participate in its rich artistic and cultural traditions.


GYO provides young musicians in grades 6-12 from all over L.A. County (Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena, La Canada, Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley) a unique opportunity to play classical music. The GYO is an Emeritus member of the LA Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Mentorship Program with Premier status and a Resident Company of the Alex Theatre since 1995.
