GYO Piano Competition

The GYO Piano Competition is for piano soloists ages 6-18, and is open to the community as well as GYO members. The concerto winner(s) will be scheduled to perform with the Glendale Youth Orchestra as appropriate, during the 2024-2025 Seasons.


Preliminary round - deadline: april 7, 2023

All applications will be evaluated in a preliminary video round. Please video record yourself performing the solo part of your concerto or concerto movement(s), 10 minutes maximum (skip measures without solo) and provide an internet link in the form below. If your piece exceeds 10 minutes, please choose a 10 minute portion from the solo.
No accompaniment is permitted for the preliminary round video. The video does not need to be high-quality (a smartphone or laptop with video camera will do). The piece should be performed live and without any evidence of editing. Once uploaded to the internet, pleases make sure the video is public (or unlisted) and can be viewed without a login.

Please note:

  • The concerto must have orchestral accompaniment available for purchase/rental.

  • The movement(s) performed in the preliminary round must be the movement(s) to be performed at the live competition and in concert.

  • Works performed during the current season are not recommended for this competition.

Applications are due by April 7, 2023 by 11:59 P.M. PST. This is a firm deadline. Late (time-stamped on April 8 or later) or incomplete applications will not be accepted, so be sure to fill out all information below when submitting.
There is a $45 fee due with the application. This fee is non-refundable.
The list of participants invited to the live competition and the appointment schedule will be posted in early May.

Competition Day - june 3, 2023

The concerto should be memorized and performed with a collaborative pianist at the live audition. If needed, GYO can provide names of pianists; however, competitors must organize their own rehearsals, audition schedule, and payment to their pianist. Location to be announced.
